The European Gas Conference – 30 years of trends and analysis

The European Gas Conference has since the start in 1981 been noted for its readiness to focus on new trends and for quality of speakers and topics. Taking place in Oslo every second year, the conference is getting people together to improve communications, to sort out trends from fluctuations and to promote analysis for the purpose of decision-making and action. The European Gas Conference has to become one of the most important meeting-places for top executives, highly qualified specialists, government representatives and others representing all major actors in the European gas market.

  • 1981 The first Europena Gas conference. The theme was "The role of natural gas in the Western Europe towards year 2000". This first conference attracted 200 participants and had ministerial speakers from Norway, UK and West Germany.
  • 1983 More than 230 participants and this conference is remembered for the fact that two of the panel delegates (Ruhrgas and Sonatrach) started to negotiate for open scene.
  • 1985 Outlook extended beyond Western Europe. The conference attracted 210 participants even if it was arranged in September and not during the beautiful spring of Oslo.
  • 1989 The conference reached a peak, attracting 264 people.
  • 1993 Prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland gave the opening address for 220 participants.
  • 1997 Changes in Europe was the focus and the conference topic this year was "The future of natural gas in an integrated Europe"
  • 2005 Integrated gas market led to new challenges, and the conference topic was "Moving towards an integrated gas market – what are the opportunities and threats for the European gas industry?"
  • 2007 The 14th European Gas Conference set focus on Competing supplies – Competing fuels – Competing players. This conference attracted in total 170 delegates.
  • 2011 This year’s European Gas Conference in June 2011 will focus “Bringing Norwegian Gas to Europe”, “Natural gas – in a low carbon Europe” and “Gas sources – origin and use”.
